Overview
Why do we need a Public School Board Council?
The Public School Board Council was created to ensure that all public school boards have an opportunity to help shape the future of public education in Alberta. PSBC is based on a civil democratic model, where every board has an equal voice in determining which issues need to be addressed. It also creates a new forum for addressing public education issues on a provincial level and allows for increased dialogue between public boards and political decision makers.
PSBC was established in response to a growing need for public school boards to speak with a single, united voice on issues that affect the future of public education. Albertans today have more choices when it comes to education, but some of those choices do not include the values of inclusion and democracy that are inherent in public education. PSBC creates an opportunity for public school boards to remind Albertans of the how integral public education is to the health of our communities and our society.
With PSBC, public school boards will be able to democratically determine, discuss, debate and make decisions about the issues that matter most, and they will be able to take those issues to the provincial stage to effect change and improvement.
In 2004 when the membership adopted the Foundation Statement it became the basis for the Public School Boards Council (PSBC). The PSBC met five times in 2005 culminating in a first birthday celebration and Showcase Event, Celebrate the Past; Shape the Future, on November 18, 2005.
The launch of the PSBC in February 2005 marked the start of a new era for public education in our province — an era where all public school boards work together to ensure that public education is the first choice among education options for all Albertans.
“PSBC will make it possible for us to discuss issues with an equal voice and to make sure that all boards benefit equally from the work we do.”
